How literature touches us - Tibullus and second-order resonance

Literature, film, theater and other forms of entertainment are central components of our cultural and social life. In particular, this can be said of literature, since texts, in whatever form, have played a central role in (almost) all societies of the world since the beginning of time. Literature is always of special interest when it brings recipients ‘into the text’, when we can particularly relate to characters of the narrative or poem and thus ‘live through’ the experiences and world relations of the subjects within the text ourselves.

This is exactly what I want to deal with in my project, using the example of the Latin poet Tibullus, and explaining this phenomenon through second-order resonance. At first the resonance axes of the poetic I of the elegies will be analyzed, then it will be discussed how these resonance axes are transferred to the recipient, thus turning him/her into a ‘new tuning fork’ (second order resonance). In order to be able to explain this "transmission", approaches from reception theory and cognitive science (reception aesthetics), but also from social history and cultural studies (intertextuality, discourse analysis, close and wide reading) and the theory of performativity are used. Through this work, on the one hand, an attempt will be made to further sharpen the resonance theory and to anchor second-order resonance as a fixed concept in the theory and, on the other hand, the elegies of Tibullus will be analyzed from a new point of view and thus once again made a topic of discussion.
