The joint International Graduate School (IGS) ‘Resonant Self-World Relations in Ancient and Modern Socio-Religious Practices’ run by the Universities of Erfurt and Graz aims to further strengthen collaboration between research in classical studies, biblical studies and sociology. The focus is on investigating the relationships of the individual to the social, material and also transcendent world, which are both established and reflected in various social and, above all, religious practices. Central to this is the question of under what conditions and with what consequences such world relations are experienced as resonant, that is, as dialogical and responsive.
As the interdisciplinary collaboration takes place across two complementary locations, it enables both a material-rich comparison and the development of new methods. It thus contributes in particular to the high-quality training of doctoral students.
The focus here is on
international exchange: doctoral students spend their second year at the partner institution, whilst receiving supervision from faculty members at both institutions.
interpersonal exchange: Tandem teams of doctoral students from each institution thereby foster substantive dialogue and, furthermore, ongoing discussion.
interdisciplinary exchange: disciplines ranging from theology to sociology and from literary studies to archaeology interact continuously, consistently and, moreover, in a practice-oriented manner.
