Goddesses of Germania Inferior new archaeological examinations on the iconography of the Matronae

The doctoral thesis analyzes the iconography of the so-called Matronae who where especially worshipped on stone reliefs and inscriptions in the region of the Ubii around the ancient city of Cologne. Some of the epigraphic sources are known for centuries by now and have been analyzed and published. The depictions of the Matronae especially those without inscriptions have mostly been left out in the relevant scientific discussion. Therefore, it is the goal of the thesis to collect existing evidences on the depictions of the Rhineland goddesses to give a new overview on the iconographic structure, the attributes and the used motives on the stone material. The collected 440 objects, which can all be roughly dated between 150 and 250 CE, are not only showing the iconographic evidence of the Matronae themselves. They additionally focus on reliefs on the sides of the existing stone altars, which can be aligned to the Matronae by their inscriptions. In the analysis of their functionality, the depictions have been compared to classical goddesses as well as to portraits of Roman empresses and portraits in the sepulchral art. The evolution of the various symbols, attributes and motives around the Matronae shows the evolution of a Roman concept with local elements used for a new iconographic deity type.
